My Mom about photo editing:
"..but if you edit it, it's not going to be it. You know what I mean? The way it was when you actually saw it."

I guess that is the ultimate task of photography, and why I love film photography so much- representing things the way we see them. Letting the light do the task of deciding the style, and taking control over the composition to choose the elements we want to portray. I'm debuting as a wedding photographer on Saturday and I'm nervous and excited, because I haven't really been confident enough to take photos of people too much. My relationship to portraits is just the same as my approach to people in general. I'm afraid that I might get on their nerves, or that they get disappointed with the results. Which is something I need to change, and which is why this gig is just right for me. I just really would have felt better with that favorite film camera by my side.

I'm curious. How do you go about when taking pictures of people?

  4. But humans do not perceive instants in time, nor framed compositions. So, photography is not an accurate representation anyway.

  5. I think the beautiful thing about photography is the ability to represent a moment that you experienced, but a moment is not necessarily all that it appears to be. I find that sometimes adding a bit of warmth to a photo goes a long way in creating a photograph that expresses more than the visual aspects of a moment. I try not to use editing as a crutch, but I think of it more as a part of the process.

I would say being an photography purist can seem nobel or romantic, but sometimes our ideals can stop us from creating something truly fantastic. I think in the end though, it's all about how you feel most confident and what your eye tells you is right.

  7. This is so exciting and you'll do great! I once turned down the opportuinty to photograph a wedding and I regret it every day! It will be a learning experience for sure, but go in there with confidence. YOU'RE the photographer, and in most cases, people LOVE being photographed at weddings. It's a happy time! Be brave, your photos are gorgeous, I know you'll do a wonderful job!
